Having a custom piece designed and made involves careful communication between the customer and the maker. Some prior questions to consider include:

  • Do you have an existing design motif that you want to match?

  • To what extent do you prefer making a bold statement with your furniture, if at all?

  • Are you interested in a build that blends more familiar elements but still achieves a uniqueness that's yours alone?

It's often helpful to explore furniture images and save pictures that have aspects of design and wood selections that you like. Not infrequently, custom builds reinterpret elements from other designs and join existing looks with new ideas.

Some people prefer providing the maker with very little specific direction, encouraging wide latitude as the design process unfolds.

Above all, prior agreement about the basic design, size, and wood selection is critical to achieving the ultimate custom piece.
